Ahead of the general election we are sharing INQUEST’s key campaign demands and asking for your support in raising them with your local candidates.

Over the last 40 years, INQUEST have worked tirelessly to transform and politicise the investigation of contentious deaths, the defence of human rights and access to justice. Alongside bereaved families, we have placed these issues firmly on the policy and public agenda and will continue to do so.

The collective experiences of the families with whom we work, and our unique overview of the investigation, inquest and inquiries system, informs our policy and campaigning work.

We are calling on all political parties to commit to:

1. Legal Aid for Inquests: Automatic non means tested legal aid funding for families’ specialist legal representation immediately following a state related death to cover preparation and representation at the inquest and other legal processes.

2. A National Oversight Mechanism: A new, independent, public body with a duty to collate, analyse and monitor recommendations and their implementation arising from post death investigations, inquiries and inquests.

3. The Public Authority (Accountability) Bill: Re-introduce ‘Hillsborough Law’ to Parliament to establish a duty of candour on state authorities and officers and private entities whose activities impact on public safety.

Alongside these three key demands that go to the heart of the search for truth, justice and accountability after state related deaths, we have also outlined our policy recommendations on prisons, policing, mental health and learning disability and Grenfell.

We very much hope that you can support our work in raising political awareness of these important issues.
